Recommend SAD light box usage

The UltraLux® II uses two settings of 50% and 100%. Many people who uselight therapy do not need the full 10,000 Lux for the light to be effective. We have found in our research that longer use at lower settings is much morecomfortable and equally effective. There is no need to look directly at the light and in fact this practice is discouraged. The light should be placed slightly above or below the direct line of vision so that it is striking the eyes at a slight angle and not directly into the eye. Go ahead and proceed with other normal tasks such as reading or working while sitting in front of the light box. Start by only using the light box for 10-15 minutes per session and slowly increase the time over the next few weeks if needed until symptoms diminish. UltraLux® II users need to sit approximately 30” away from the unit for 10,000 Lux treatment and48” away for a 5,000 Lux treatment.

What is the best time of day for light therapy?

Light therapy is typically best used early in the morning within the first 30-60 minutes after waking. Most individuals suffering from seasonal affective disorder also experience sleep phase disorders and have a difficult time waking in the morning.

The use of light therapy upon waking in the morning helps to regulate circadian rhythms and melatonin/serotonin levels believed to be responsible forseasonal disorders. Avoid exposure to bright light and light therapy late in the day and evenings to prevent difficulties in going to sleep at night.
