Lenovo D400 Ideacentre - 4 SATA Bay NAS Home Server, Atom 230

$35.00

For Sale: A totally cubeular Lenovo D400 that originally sold with Windows Home Server operating system, currently running NAS4free network addressable storage NAS software based on FreeBSD.

Has an Intel Atom 230 dual thread CPU, 1GB of  RAM, gigabit ethernet, an eSATA port, and 5 USB ports.. Includes one 320GB SATA hard drive that is acting as boot drive. Can hold up to four 3.5" SATA hard drives and comes with 4 tool-less hard drive caddies. When it was made it was certified for hard drives up to 2TB but it should not be an issue using much larger drives - 8TB, 16TB? as long as you format correctly.

NAS4free (current version is Xigmanas) is packed with features including Transmission bit torrent software, a web server, SSH, Dynamic DNS, Samba, FTP, DLNA, music server, and tons of other programs. It has lots of energy saving features so you can spin down the drives when not being used, control CPU speed, and lots of other related features. The Atom CPU only draws max 2-3 watts by itself so even if you leave this on 24-7 it will probably use less electricity than a light bulb.

Everything I tried works well on this system. There is no monitor port on this computer and the way you access is by attaching it with an ethernet cable to your home network, going to IP address 192.168.1.250 (easily changeable or can use DHCP), and typing in "newuser" and password "555254". To add new hard drives you plug them in, go to Disk Management, click on import. To make them accessible on your network you add a Mount Point and a Share volume. Then you can access your files on any computer on your network, or even over the internet if you know what you are doing.

The computer comes with a COA for Windows Home Server so you could also reinstall that if you want. There are other free NAS software OSs available as well. If you know what you are doing you can install Linux on this without much trouble. If used as a NAS ideally you will put the operating system on a USB flash drive and boot to that and free up the hard drive for more storage space.
