Uses a ceramic micro-filter and it appears to have absolutely no wear on it at all- this checked using the red plastic measuring tool that's included. The filter unit appears to have been used at least once along with activated charcoal- unit is pretty clean but not mint unused.
This device can be used either with or without activated charcoal and one little package of charcoal is included. The ceramic filter by itself is effective against micro-organisms in the water, adding charcoal will be effective against bad tastes and chemicals.
The ceramic filter is rated for 50,000 liters but will depend on how dirty the water you are filtering is and other factors. You can get a replacement filter if ever needed.
Tested this by putting the floating intake tube into a pot of water and pumping. Quickly was able to fill up a bottle of water with not a lot of effort. Works well- no leaks or problems or issues during testing. It was then disassembled and carefully dried before storing. Included is an original tube of lubricant for the rubber gaskets, a small rubber O ring replacement gasket, and a scrubbing pad for cleaning the micro-filter. All in great shape.

The Katadyn Combi gives you a two-for-one package (active carbon and ceramic). Simple change to 1-stage operation (only ceramic without activated carbon stage). The tried and tested ceramic depth filter removes bacteria, protozoa and other disease-causing agents.
