Windows 98se/XP dual boot - RETRO GAMING COMPUTER - P4, 512MB, 80GB

$240.00

For Sale: Complete set. Includes an HP 19" LCD monitor, Monsoon subwoofer with flat panel stereo speakers, an HP keyboard, and an optical scroll mouse.

Dual boots to Windows 98se and Windows XP Pro SP3. When you power on you are presented with a menu, if you choose nothing Win 98 starts after 5 seconds. Both operating systems are fully configured with all drivers installed. Audio, video, ethernet, serial, parallel, USB, etc. all are working correctly. Both have hundreds of updates, security patches, third party patches, tweaks, etc. installed. No issues.

The case is an early windowed ATX gaming case that has front "hellfire red" LED strips and side mounted red LED cooling fan on clear plexiglass window. There are even red LEDs in the ATX power supply. Has mounts for optional front and rear 120mm fans. It's a high capacity case with space for four 3.5" hard drives, two 3.5" slots (one has floppy drive installed), and four slots for 5.25" drives (two are used by CD and DVD drives). It's also probably possible to squeeze another couple hard drives in if needed. One nice feature of this case is that you can also mount 2.5" laptop SSD drives in the 5.25" slots with just two screws - no adapters needed.

The case has some general wear and some dings but is solid and complete. Fans are not loud.

This was set up to be a retro gaming PC so for testing tried a bunch of Windows 98 and Windows XP era games. Almost all the ones I tried worked great with excellent audio and video, see photos for details on some of the ones that were tested. Classic versions of MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) are installed as well as utilities for virtual discs, 7-Zip, media player classic, video codecs, and more. Computer was tested for many many hours and not one freeze up or blue screen. Very reliable.

This has onboard ADI1981a audio that has been disabled in the BIOS so the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card can be used instead.

Specs:

  • Intel/Gateway D865GVLC motherboard, Intel 82865G chipset with 2 IDE connectors, floppy connectors, 2 SATA connectors, 3 PCI slots

  • 512MB RAM installed on two 256MB sticks (2 open slots) plus 2 additional uninstalled 256MB sticks - 1GB RAM total*
  • Sound Blaster SB0400 Audigy 2 PCI card
  • 80GB IDE hard drive
  • 3.5" floppy drive -tested working great

  • DVD RW drive reader,writer,burner - tested

  • HP USB keyboard
  • optical scroll mouse
  • HP L1906 19" flat screen monitor
  • all power cords and cables
  • new BIOS battery installed 9/2025

NOTE: the Monsoon speaker set includes a homebrew wired volume control- you can use it without the volume control but if you do you can hear just a little crackling in the flat panel speakers- with the volume control set about halfway the crackle is inaudible and you can just use the computer's Windows volume to adjust volume. Sound quality is good and can get loud if you want.

  • Windows 98 usually won't boot if you have over 512MB RAM installed. Some systems may boot but have issues with sound or some programs not loading, errors, blue screens, etc. I think there is a free program that will limit the RAM Windows 98 can see but haven't tried it yet. The two extra 256MB sticks are included in case you want to try this program or just want to use Windows XP which will run a lot smoother/faster on 1GB.
