For Sale: Set of older Acoustic Research amplified speakers.
Woofers have just been refoamed Feb. 2014. Sound quality is good and built in amps work correctly- no static or hum, good bass, good treble response. These are two way metal case speakers that can be run off 120 vac house currunt or 14 volt DC- I have read that they work fine with a 12 volt car battery/cigarette lighter adapter too. Good for tailgaiting... They can also be pole mounted. Heavy and high quality construction. I tested these with direct input from a CD player. The inputs are RCA jack labeled 10K ohms. Each also has an unswitched 120vac outlet on back. Power cords are included. These are an early version and would guess they were made in the 1980's.
Both show a fair amount of wear and one has the little ridge on the volume control knob broken off, you can still adjust volume without too much trouble. Power switch, tone control, and green power LED indicator light are working correctly. These are not marked but some research indicates they are AR's model 570 which are sometimes called "Powered Partners" and were made for several years, also under the Advent brand name. The grills on these do not seem to be removable. When I replaced the woofer foam I also put epoxy on back for the tweeter magnets as these are known to come off due to the glue getting brittle over the years.
Note that if you are looking to buy a pair of these (off ebay for example) MAKE SURE to get a guarantee that they have been refoamed because the foam always needs replacing eventually. The speakers will still work with bad foam but will distort and get damaged if you turn the volume up
