To record programs and to use this with Cable TV you will have to subscribe to Tivo service. It uses one or two Cable TV cards which by law your cable provider has to make available to you.
It also has a built in ATSC tuner which gets excellent reception of local free digital TV channels so even without a subscription or cable cards you can use it to freeze live TV for up to 1/2 hour. This is a GREAT way to skip commercials. Just start watching your favorite shows 1/2 after they start then Fast Forward through the commercials when they come up. Of if you get a phone call or need to leave the room while watching a show just hit Stop button and the program is recorded for 1/2 hour.
If you hate commercials but like watching local TV then with a little planning this could be a great device for you. Works especially well with sports games...
160 gig hard driver working well. Remote is from a Series II but controls all or almost all the features of the Series III. High definition display.
