Windows 98se has been installed along with hundreds of updates, security patches, and third party fixes as well as useful utilities and programs. Since this is intended mainly to be used for playing older games from the 1990's and the 2000's I tested a bunch of classics on it and most worked without any issues. Some excellent older games won't run well or at all on Win98 so Windows XP 32 bit SP3 Integrated Edition has also been installed on a smaller partition on the hard drive. When you power on the computer you are presented with a menu that lets you choose either 98 or XP, if you choose nothing Windows 98 will start after a few seconds. Windows XP has ALL available updates installed as well as lots of patches and fixes. You can even browse many modern websites (at your own risk) using the installed MyPal68 web browser which is based on backported Firefox.
Both Windows 98 and XP run well on this system. Dell supplied complete drivers for Windows 98, Windows 2000, and XP so you have a lot of choices with this computer.. The included 32MB ATI Rage 128 AGP graphics card will play classic 3D games like Forsaken, Quake III Arena, and Unreal Tournament at good frame rates. Office 97 with Word and Excel is installed, KLite Mega Codec pack with Windows Media Player Classic for video, Irfan View for photo viewing, Alcohol 120% for disc images, Win RAR for archives, and lots more utilities.
Everything has been checked and have spent a couple hours gaming on this system- no freezups or bluescreens or issues occurred. The BIOS battery is good.. Mouse and keyboard are working well. The 3.5" floppy drive works well and was used to update the BIOS to latest available A05 (one disk is included) The CD RW drive works well and reads disc reliably.
BONUS: a CD rom with live version of Puppy Linux NoblePup that runs OK on this computer. It will probably allow you to get online and download stuff, and save on either the Windows 98 FAT32 or the Windows XP NFTS partition.
Note: the system comes with 1GB RAM on two 512MB sticks. Usually Windows 98 won't boot with more than 512MB RAM installed but for some reason on this system it works fine - and Win98 can see all 1GB. No memory related problems occurred during testing.
Minor issues: 1). the Samsung monitor has built in speakers and both work but the left speaker has some distortion in it and is not as loud as the right speaker. You may want to use external PC speakers. 2). Sometimes when you shut down Windows 98 it does not power off completely and must be powered off manually by holding the power switch for 10 seconds or so. 3.) Computer and some accessories show minor wear and scratches, not bad. Check the higher resolution photos carefully. The photos ARE the description and what you see is what you will receive. Since this is a vintage PC it's being sold as-is but tested carefully and described accurately and honestly.
